A Day In The Life: Repairing A Machine To Break Up Concrete Runway - Part 4 of 4

From Part 1 of 4: This was a fascinating job done for Antigo Construction out of Idaho who was contracted to break up a runway at Travis Air Force Base in Northern CA.

These brutal machines are remotely operated and have a 20,000 lbs. guillotine type breaker bar that is used to break (pulverize) concrete down to a depth of 3’ (36”). Not only does the breaker bar bit wear out, but these machines literally destroy themselves over time.

Part 4 shown here. Here are more cracks and repairs to the concrete busting machine as they developed. During the early design of these machines, additional support (gussets) had to be added to reinforce failed areas. This was jointly solved by myself and the engineering department at Antigo which was also added to the rest of the breakers in Antigo’s fleet.

EXPERTISE:

  • Commercial Work, Classic restorations, Custom Exhaust, Frames, Structural welding
  • Small to large scale piping jobs that operate under high pressure and temperature service, sanitary welding
  • Platform construction and repairs including redesigning and or replacement
  • Custom fabrication of guards, handrails, safety covers, and shields to comply with OSHA and Cal OSHA regulations.
  • Overlay and weld build-up using Stellite and other hard facing Alloys.

A Day In The Life: Repairing A Machine To Break Up Concrete Runway - Part 2 of 4

Part 2 shown here. Here are more repairs to the concrete busting machine as they developed. The Frame also doubles as the hydraulic reservoir, so any crack in the structure is immediately apparent by oil leaking out of it.

EXPERTISE:

  • Commercial Work, Classic restorations, Custom Exhaust, Frames, Structural welding
  • Small to large scale piping jobs that operate under high pressure and temperature service, sanitary welding
  • Platform construction and repairs including redesigning and or replacement

These brutal machines are remotely operated and have a 20,000 lbs. guillotine type breaker bar that is used to break (pulverize) concrete down to a depth of 3’ (36”). Not only does the breaker bar bit wear out, but these machines literally destroy themselves over time.

Here's a YouTube video example of this type of machine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mJBo0niBrk

I spent many hours replacing the breaker bar bits and repairing cracks in the mast carriage as well as the frame structure which is also the hydraulic fluid reservoir. Once a crack develops the machine has to be shut down and the failure repaired to minimize the environmental impact from oil loss.

EXPERTISE:

  • Commercial Work, Classic restorations, Custom Exhaust, Frames, Structural welding
  • Small to large scale piping jobs that operate under high pressure and temperature service, sanitary welding
  • Platform construction and repairs including redesigning and or replacement
